Parents learning to read alongside their children
Afternoon literacy groups in Nangarhar have helped 380 parents learn to read and write in Pashto this year.

When children started reading at home, many parents in Surkh Rod asked if they could learn too. Last autumn we began afternoon literacy groups in 14 community classrooms, after the children's lessons end.
Each group meets three times a week with a teacher from the village. They use a simple Pashto reader that we wrote with local teachers, with stories about farming, family health and everyday life.
After six months, 380 parents can read a short text and write their own names and simple sentences. Several told us that they can now read medicine labels and help their children with homework.
The groups will continue this year, and we plan to open ten more.
