We are Afghans and friends of Afghanistan, working with communities that know what they need
MBT Foundation began in 2012 with one rented classroom in Kabul. Today our teams work in nine provinces, and almost all of our staff live in the communities they serve.
Our story
Key moments from more than a decade of work.
One classroom in Kabul
A group of teachers and Afghan families abroad rent a room in Kabul and open an evening class for 40 children.
First village classes
Eight community classes open in Parwan and Kapisa, taught by teachers from the villages themselves.
Our health program begins
Our first health post opens in Bamyan, with a doctor and two midwives.
Training community midwives
With the provincial health department, we start an 18-month midwifery course. The first 24 midwives graduate in 2020.
Staying through the crisis
When funding across the country stopped, our teams stayed. We added winter food support for the families of our pupils and patients.
Mobile clinics on the road
Two mobile clinic teams begin regular visits to remote villages in Badakhshan and Daykundi.
Nine provinces, 12,000 pupils
Our community classes reach more than 12,000 children, and our health teams give over 86,000 consultations in a single year.
Our mission
To make sure children can learn and families can reach health care, wherever they live in Afghanistan.
Our vision
An Afghanistan where no family has to choose between a child's schooling and a mother's health.
Our values
Led by communities
Villages decide where classes and health posts go, and help to run them.
Local people, local jobs
Almost all of our staff come from the provinces where they work.
Open about money
We publish what we spend every year, and an independent firm audits our accounts.
Here for the long term
When we start work in a village, we plan to stay for years, not months.
Our team
A small leadership team supports more than 300 teachers and health workers in the provinces.

Sample data
$25 keeps a child in class for a whole term
That pays for books, a slate and a share of a local teacher's salary. Give once or every month.
