Why this project

At the start of the 2023 school year, many families in Surkh Rod and Behsud told teachers that they could not buy books. Without books, children shared one copy between four or five pupils, and many stopped coming.

What we did

Together with school committees, we listed every pupil in grades one to six in 31 schools. We bought textbooks in Pashto from the national curriculum, along with notebooks, pencils and a school bag for each child, from suppliers in Jalalabad.

Committee members and teachers checked every delivery against the pupil lists. Each family signed or thumb-printed for their child's set.

What we learned

Buying locally kept costs down and money in the local economy. Delivering through school committees meant that parents saw the supplies arrive and trusted that they were complete.

  • Primary school textbooks in Pashto spread on a table

$25 keeps a child in class for a whole term

That pays for books, a slate and a share of a local teacher's salary. Give once or every month.
