Why this project

Many villages in Yakawlang and Panjab are a long walk from the nearest government school, across steep ground that is blocked by snow for months each year. Families told us that young children, and girls especially, simply stayed at home.

What we did

Village elders offered rooms in homes and guest houses. We furnished each room with mats, a whiteboard and a heater, and supplied a full set of textbooks to every pupil. Teachers were chosen by the community and trained by our education team for twelve days before classes began.

Our education officers visited each class every month to observe lessons and help teachers with planning. Pupils took a short reading and maths check at the start, middle and end of the project.

What we learned

Classes that met in a warm room kept almost all of their pupils through the winter. In the second year we added a small heating budget to every class, which is now part of our standard design.

$25 keeps a child in class for a whole term

That pays for books, a slate and a share of a local teacher's salary. Give once or every month.
